The academic preparation and role development of the nurse practitioner in the UK has largely focused on adult patients. This is in contrast to the clinical setting where the percentage of paediatric consultations in busy ambulatory sites (e.g. primary care, accident and emergency, walk-in centres, etc.) may approach 30-40%. A large proportion of nurse practitioners (NPs)
that care for children do not have extensive paediatric experience, nor a children's nursing qualification. In formalised NP programmes, typically there is very little paediatric content.
