Nursing Care of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Patient (ebook) Free Download

Preface of this books

When we began working in pediatric neurosurgery as advanced practice nurses, we searched for a reference that would explain the different neurosurgical conditions affecting our patients and teach us how to care for them. There was nothing to be found. We asked our colleagues for a reference and they, too, had found none. “Someone should write a book about how to care for pediatric neurosurgery patients,” we all said each time we met at the AANS pediatric neurosurgery section meeting.
Finally, it dawned on us. We were the someone. We were the ones that have cared for these children over the years. We were the ones that should share our experiences and write the book.
And, so, a number of pediatric neurosurgery nurses pooled our expertise to write this book to teach nurses how to care for children with neurosurgical conditions. Although not comprehensive in scope, it provides basic knowledge of the pathophysiology, medical-surgical intervention, nursing considerations and outcomes for the more common neurosurgical conditions. Each chapter reflects the authors’ experience with a particular topic in addition to pediatric practice pearls that focus on important issues.
This book would not be possible without the tremendous effort of all the authors, including those unnamed ones who helped. Putting practice, and the evidence to support it, to paper can be daunting, especially when doing so means late nights rewriting drafts, long weekends in the library and asking your family to be patient for “just a little longer.” Although we are considered a “small niche,” Springer saw the importance of providing such a reference and we are grateful for the work they did to
bring this to publication.
The editors would also like to acknowledge the University of Missouri Health Care and Barrow Neurological Institute for providing the atmosphere of learning and support that allows us to care for our patients.
Most of all, this book is for our patients and their families. Thank you for letting us be a part of your lives in the midst of crisis and when you are most vulnerable. We recognize that having a child with a neurosurgical disorder can be a life-changing event and we are honored that you “let us in.” It is our hope that his book will inform, teach and guide those who have accepted the responsibility to care for these children.

Nursing Practice in Multiple Sclerosis (ebook) Free Download

Multiple sclerosis is a lifelong, potentially disabling disease of the central nervous system that affects the white matter tracts of the central nervous system in a sporadic and unpredictable manner. The disease produces inflammation and demyelination of the white matter, as well as varying amounts of damage and destruction to the underlying axon. The onset of disease is most often in early adulthood. Individuals experience a myriad of symptoms with likely progression of disability over time. Symptoms may include fatigue, visual disturbances, sensory changes, incoordination, pain, tremor, elimination dysfunction, and cognitive impairment. Symptoms usually occur as relapses early in the disease, or as symptoms that appear over 24–48 hours and recede to some extent over weeks to months. After a decade or so, many individuals experience fewer relapses, but in their place is a slow progression of MS symptoms that often leads to increased functional disability over time. A small percentage of patients will experience progression from the onset of the disease and experience progressive mobility impairment over time.
MS invades every aspect of life, and patients as well as families can be severely affected. Patients and families experience a sense of loss, both real and perceived. The disease can adversely impact the roles of provider, spouse, parent, friend, and employee. There are emotional consequences of the disease as well as physical ones. As the disease is one for life, individuals and families will have multiple needs throughout their lives. They will need emotional support, education, symptom management, adaptation to changes, adaptive equipment, supportive care, and perhaps even end of life care.
Nursing is a critical element in meeting the multiple needs of the MS patient and family. MS nurses have evolved from home-based care providers giving support to the disabled person to certified MS nurses and advanced practice nurses who must be well educated in the disease process and the available treatments. In addition, MS nurses must be sensitive to and supportive of the emotional needs of those affected by the disease. MS nurses must provide appropriate education regarding the disease process, treatment regimes, symptom management, and community resources.

Anxiety Management in Adult day Surgery (ebook) Free Download

This book is centrally concerned with the formal management of preoperative anxiety. The vast majority of patients experience varying degrees of anxiety when entering hospital for surgery and yet little formal intervention is commonly provided. This is the first book of its kind to be written for nurses exclusively concerning the complete formal pre- and postoperative management of anxiety in relation to modern, elective, adult day surgery. During the early 1970s classic nursing studies suggested information provision to be crucial for effective inpatient preoperative anxiety management. However, following such early recommendations no other formal aspects of psychoeducational care have impacted on mainstream surgical nursing intervention. Physical aspects of care have dominated proceedings for the last three decades or more, whereas psychoeducational aspects have largely remained informal, marginal issues. Both surgery and anaesthesia have changed dramatically during this period and nursing intervention must now do likewise.
The domination of physical nursing intervention is, however, slowly changing as the continuous global rise in elective ambulatory surgery has highlighted the need for more structured psychoeducational approaches to patient care. The psychological theories to aid preoperative anxiety management have been available for many years. However, they have not succeeded in making an impact within the clinical surgical setting, because they have not previously been constructed into a coherent, clinically realistic plan of care. The purpose of this book is therefore (1) to consider the relevant psychological concepts that can inform and guide modern surgical nursing practices, (2) to provide a comprehensive map of the wider evidence available and (3) to introduce clinically realistic nursing interventions necessary for the complete psychoeducational management of adult patients undergoing elective, ambulatory surgery.
On a philosophical level, I hope to communicate with a wide audience of nurses working in the field of adult ambulatory surgery or studying modern surgical nursing practices. We need to re-evaluate nursing knowledge for this new surgical era so that compelling nursing evidence can help to guide practice and not remain in the shadows of medical advances. This book is intended to provoke debate within the profession, present the case for change and, above all, demonstrate the ability of nursing knowledge to make a significant contribution to the care required by patients experiencing modern ambulatory surgery. Much evidence, within the nursing domain, is widely available to help guide important global nursing issues in ambulatory surgery.
The political reforms currently running through the National Health Service in the UK have resulted in nursing knowledge largely becoming marginalized. The utilization of nurses and their skills features widely in these reforms, but not the utilization of nursing skills based on nursing knowledge. Surgical self-preparation and self-recovery are now implicit aspects of the modern surgical patients’ experience. Patients and their relatives did not request this new, essential role although most now welcome the social convenience and swift treatment that day surgery affords. Such advances have, however, guaranteed that many of yesterday’s professional nursing interventions have become today’s layperson interventions. Much physical surgical nursing is increasingly becoming obsolete because it can now be undertaken by laypeople. I am hopeful that this book will add to the debate about the future of modern surgical nursing intervention, because the trend of surrendering much pre- and postoperative care to relatives and replacing it with interventions that once were the domain of junior doctors must not remain unchallenged. ‘New’ nursing knowledge has much to offer the ambulatory surgery patient and we must robustly demonstrate how our professional knowledge can make this contribution. Professional knowledge and its application are powerful, liberating and motivating forces. I hope that this book empowers, liberates and motivates all who read it and that you find it as stimulating to read as I have found it to write.

Fundamental of Nursing Skills (ebook) Free Download

This book has arisen primarily in response to the increasing concern expressed about the perceived lack of ability in both students and newly qualified staff nurses to perform clinical skills. This deficit has been largely attributed to the advent of Project 2000 and the subsequent move of nurse education into Higher Education. Innovations in nursing such as the Nursing Process, Nursing Models and new methods of organizing care delivery, each with their emphasis on providing individualized nursing care, may also have exacerbated this problem. These initiatives have largely resulted in the demise of procedure manuals as a source of reference in many clinical areas. Consequently nurses and the increasing number of health care workers in new roles such as cadet nurses, health care assistants and generic ward practitioners no longer have an easily accessible source of reference in the clinical arena. This is particularly problematic when they are faced with undertaking a procedure for the first time.

Key Nursing Skills (ebook) Download

The authors, who all have wide experience in teaching and practising adult nursing, collaborated to write this book, which evolved from a clinical skills module. It became apparent that students loved learning the introductory nursing skills, but there were few easily accessible texts to support their learning. This book is therefore aimed at nursing students embarking on their nursing education, although some of it will also be suitable for care assistants who are involved in delivering direct nursing care to patients. It may also be useful as a teaching resource for qualified nurses who provide support to learners in the clinical area and those who are returning to practice who need to be clinically updated. The book is not intended to be a substitute for appropriate supervision in clinical practice, and no responsibility can be taken by the writers or publisher for any damage or injury to persons or property.

Nutrition: A Handbook for Community Nurses (ebook) Free Download

Series Preface

This series of handbooks has been devised to help community nurses answer commonly asked questions. Many of the questions are asked by patients, others by colleagues. The books have been written by specialists, and although they are not intended as full clinical texts, they are fully referenced from current evidence to validate the content. The purpose of each handbook is to provide ‘facts at the fingertips’, so that trawling through textbooks is not needed. This is achieved through the question and answer format, with cross referencing between sections. Where further information may be required, the reader is referred to specific texts. Many patients want some control over their illnesses, and use the internet to access information. The useful address sections include website addresses to share with both patients and colleagues.
It is hoped that these handy reference books will answer most everyday questions. If there are areas which you feel have been neglected, please let us know for future editions.

Practical Resuscitation (ebook) Free Download

There are few greater challenges to the skills and ability of a healthcare provider than those posed by the patient in cardiac arrest. In no other condition do the actions of those who first manage the patient have such a profound influence on survival. Many who provide the initial care for such patients are relatively junior with limited experience, but their actions may literally mean the difference between life and death.
The skills required during a resuscitation attempt are essentially practical, although underpinned by sound theoretical principles. In this book Practical Resuscitation: recognition and response, several experts have collaborated to provide a very readable approach to the acquisition of both the theoretical knowledge required and the practical techniques needed to resuscitate the victim of cardiopulmonary arrest. The approach in all cases is practical, depending on skills in assessment of the casualty, with subsequent actions determined by the findings. The rationale behind these actions is explained, as are the techniques required. Finally, the practitioner is encouraged to reflect on the events that have taken place and use this process to learn and improve further.
After sections on ethical and professional issues, the basic principles of resuscitation medicine and the equipment used are described. Chapters then progress logically from basic life support to advanced techniques, with several chapters devoted to more specialised aspects of advanced life support. The overall result is a comprehensive introduction that will serve the newcomer to the hospital ward well, as well as the more experienced practitioner undertaking an extended role. While intended primarily for nurses, it is equally suitable for medical or paramedical staff who may participate in resuscitation attempts or who wish to learn more about the subject.
All the authors are based in the west of England, in Gloucester or Bristol, and are to be congratulated for producing an eminently readable account that is both a practical introduction to the subject as well as a manual for learning and applying practical skills in the treatment of patients. At the same time it provides a comprehensive introduction at a more advanced level, to a subject of increasing importance in modern healthcare. In no small way is this also due to the skilful editorship of Pam Moule and John Albarran, two stalwarts of nurse education, based at the University of the West of England. With the skills that can be learnt from this volume, the basis of sound practice will be established and serve the reader well in practice whether working as a first responder, a member of the cardiac arrest team or as the team leader.

Encyclopedia of Nursing Research (ebook) Free Download

This second edition of the Encyclopedia of Nursing Research (ENR), like the first, is a comprehensive, yet concise and authoritative guide to existing nursing research literature. It charts the course of nursing research since 1983 when the first edition of the Annual Review of Nursing Research (ARNR) was published. The original edition of ENR, published in 1998, grew from a long-standing commitment of the publisher, Dr. Ursula Springer, to the field of nursing, and my commitment to nurse scholars around the globe. The original encyclopedia followed 15 years of publication of the ARNR series. This second edition of ENR follows publication of 22 volumes of ARNR and incorporates the research topics included in the ARNR series. Through these formative years of nursing science, I have had the privilege of serving as editor of the ARNR series and witnessing the rapid growth of knowledge and expertise in nursing research. Having served as editor for the first edition of ENR, I am joined in this edition by Meredith Wallace, the Associate Editor.
Nurse researchers and graduate students in nursing will be the primary audience for this edition of ENR. Yet, as with the first edition, nurses in all phases of education, from basic to doctoral, from formal university and college-based programs to continuing education offerings, within all health systems, will find this an important introduction to current nursing research topics. The alphabetical list of entries is provided to assist the reader in quickly finding the relevant term. While every effort was made to include the most comprehensive list of entries, based on both a literature review of key terms in journals and the ARNR series and the expert advice of the Advisory Board members, we are cognizant of the fact that some terms may have been overlooked. Thus, we encourage readers to advise us of new terms that should be added to the already extensive list.

Nursing Health Assessment (ebook) Free Download

Dear Students,

Welcome to F.A. Davis’s Nursing Health Assessment: A Critical Thinking, Case Study Approach, second edition. Assessment is the first step of the nursing process and probably the most important because your assessment directs the rest of the process. It does not matter what your outcomes and goals are if you “missed it” on the assessment!
Assessment is a thinking, doing, and feeling process. You need to think as you act and interact with your patients. Think critically as you proceed through the assessment process and make clinical decisions.
Assessment is a skill, and as with any skill, the more you practice, the better you become. This book will walk you through the assessment process, but it is up to you to develop the skill. As a beginning practitioner, focus on learning the normal. Once you are able to identify the normal, if something abnormal occurs, you will know! Initially, you may not be able to identify the abnormal, but you will know that it does not belong. Don’t worry; with practice you will be able not only to identify the normal, but also to differentiate it from the abnormal.
You will use assessment in every area of nursing. As you perfect your assessment skills, you will find that you can apply them to all levels of health care, in the community, in acute care, in the home, and in long-term care. F.A. Davis has a variety of resources available to meet your learning needs and develop your assessment skills. Here is a brief guide on how to use them.

■ Interact with the case study in the text. This is your patient.
■ Review your anatomy and physiology, apply the assessment process, and identify your learning needs through the self-evaluation exercises in the applications text.
■ Listen to the heart, breath, and bowel auscultatory sounds again and again until you can clearly hear each sound.
■ Visit DavisPlus for additional resources.
■ Validate your assessment findings and perfect your skills by using your pocket guide in the clinical area.

Consider this text your guide to assessment.Take ownership of it as you learn to assess. Consider the case studies as your patients. As you interact with them, you will learn assessment. Every patient encounter provides you with an opportunity to assess, so seize the opportunity. You can learn so much from your patients. Make each encounter with your patient a learning experience as you develop the skill—and art—of assessment. So practice, practice, practice! And have fun as you develop your assessment skills.

Nurses Manual of Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests 4th ed (ebook) Free Download

This book is designed to provide both students and practitioners of nursing with the information they need to care for individuals undergoing laboratory and diagnostic tests and procedures. The content is presented as a guiding reference for planning care, providing specific interventions, and evaluating outcomes of nursing care.
In this edition, the background information and description of the test or procedure are followed directly by the clinical applications data, starting with reference values, for each test or group of tests.
The introductory sections include the anatomic, physiological, and pathophysiological content necessary for a thorough understanding of the purpose of and indications for specific tests and procedures. The inclusion of this information makes this book unlike many other references on this subject matter. This feature enhances the integration of basic science knowledge with an understanding of and application to diagnostic testing. This is extremely helpful for nursing students in developing critical thinking and clinical judgment.
For each test or study within the respective sections, reference values, including variations related to age or gender, are provided. Critical values, where appropriate, are highlighted. Both conventional units and international units are provided. Readers are encouraged to be aware of some variation in laboratory values from agency to agency.
For all tests, interfering factors are noted where appropriate. Contraindications and Nursing Alerts are included to provide information crucial to safe and reliable testing and nursing care.
Other features of this manual that contribute to its practical use are presentation of detailed content in tabular format when appropriate and the use of appendices to provide essential information applicable to most, if not all, tests and procedures.
Every effort has been made to include tests and procedures currently in use in practice settings. It is recognized that newer tests and procedures may have become available after this manuscript was prepared. Readers are encouraged to keep abreast of current literature and consult with laboratories and agencies in their area for new developments in the field of diagnostic tests.
